The Truth Will Set Them Free
A site detailing the wrongful conviction of Amanda Knox & Raffaele Sollecito
There has been a lot of talk about Meredith's door being locked. One argument is that the shoe prints, set in blood, on the floor prove that Rudy did not lock the door. This is simply not true.
The floor in front of Meredith's door was a high traffic area before the evidence on the floor was collected. This evidence was most likely compromised by the heavy traffic. Many people walked on the floor. Meredith's door was also broken open. This would have created significant foot traffic to that area of the floor. It is very possible that some of the blood traces were eliminated or compromised. Keep in mind, the shoe prints, set in blood, in the hall are all partial prints. The print right outside the door was the most visible print and the prints became smaller and less visible as they went toward the front door.
These prints are all from Rudy's left foot. They are from the sole of his shoe and they all match his Nike Outbreak 2 shoe tread pattern.
The prints that we have to work with do not prove or disprove that Rudy locked the door. They do prove that is was possible. It wasn't only possible but it would have been a natural motion for Rudy to take. When we look at the prints that were photographed, it is very clear to see that Rudy could have easily stepped into the hall with his left foot pulling the door closed with his right hand. His right foot would come into the hall and end up facing the door. He would be in a position to easily lock the door and proceed toward the front door.
Below you can see that the foot print is right outside of Meredith's door. The print is angled toward the front door. This print is from Rudy's left shoe.

You can see from the photograph below that the print is angled toward the front door.
The picture below shows the complete tread pattern for the Nike Outbreak 2 shoes that Rudy was wearing on the night of the murder. If you print out the picture below and flip it over so the printed side faces the floor, you will see that this is a left shoe.
As I stated above, the evidence doesn't prove that Rudy locked the door. The evidence does prove that it would have been very easy for Rudy to lock the door.
Here is a closer look at the print. You can compare the print in the photo to the black and white image below. The black and white image shows the print that Rudy's left foot would have made on the floor.
