Injustice Anywhere Forum: Injustice in Perugia Public Forum - Amanda Knox Case
When I first heard the news of the brutal murder of Meredith Kercher I felt angry and disgusted. I felt horrible for her and for her family. I felt sick to my stomach thinking about the horrible crime. I thought about my own daughter and couldn't possibly imagine what her parents were going through. These were normal human reactions to a horrible murder. As the days went by and the information about Amanda Knox flooded the news cycle, I thought that Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were most likely guilty. After all, the evidence must have been overwhelming for the media to attack the two of them so viciously. I figured the authorities were simply holding the evidence until trial. The one thing that struck me in the beginning was the photograph that circulated showing Amanda and Raffaele standing outside the murder scene. The media kept flashing that photograph. The media was more focused on Amanda than Raffaele. From the media's description, I was supposed to see Amanda as a sex crazed murderer. What I saw was a scared, young woman who looked as though she were in shock. I put that thought on hold because, after all, the media was bombarding me with information telling me these two people were guilty; but my thoughts of that photograph never left my mind completely. The media continued to be relentless. We have all heard stories about mop buckets and bleach receipts. We have heard about Harry Potter books and cartwheels. And let's not forget about the underwear and wild sex. It wasn't over yet...there was more. There were footprints in blood everywhere and Raffaele's DNA on Meredith's bra clasp. Most importantly, we heard about the key piece of evidence, the "smoking gun" for the prosecution. They had the murder weapon, the double DNA knife. At that point, for many people, Amanda and Raffaele were guilty. There was no looking back, case closed.

But for me, I still kept thinking about that photograph. I kept seeing a young woman who was scared. I kept seeing a young woman in shock. I also thought about the fact that Amanda voluntarily walked to the police department day after day talking to the investigators about the murder. She could have left, but she stayed. She told her mother on the phone that she wanted to help the police solve the murder. These didn't appear to be actions of a guilty person but, once again, I put those feelings on hold.

I started to question the case. I started to open up my mind to every aspect of the case. Most of the information the media said in the beginning was turning out to be lies and misinformation. Accusations of leaks by the prosecution were being reported. When the trial started, months went by with no real evidence. Just elaborate fantasies from the prosecution and character assassinations of the worst degree. We were all waiting for the evidence but it never came. At a closer look at the footprints revealed that they were not made in blood; the knife revealed that there was no blood on the blade; and most importantly, there was no reliable evidence that there was any DNA from Meredith on the knife at all. The knife was randomly taken from a kitchen drawer. No other knives were tested. A spoon could have been taken from the same kitchen and given the same result. However, it would have been very hard to claim that Meredith was killed with a spoon. The prosecution had no murder weapon. A closer look at the bra clasp revealed poor evidence handling and DNA from several other people was found on the clasp, proving it was contaminated. The defense asked for an independent review of the DNA, but was denied by the Judge who, by the way, was also a member of the jury. Was his mind already made up? The interrogation of Amanda Knox was ruled inadmissible by the Italian supreme court, but the civil trial was running concurrently with the murder trial, so the jury had the results of the illegal interrogation read to them anyway.

When the limited evidence that was presented by the prosecution was disproved, all that was left to convict Amanda and Raffaele was a cartwheel; but it was too late. The jury slept and the Judge took phone calls.

On the day of the verdict, I knew what the Judge was going to say before he said it. The same feelings that I had when I heard about the murder of Meredith all came back to me. I felt angry and disgusted. I felt horrible for Amanda and Raffaele. I felt sick to my stomach. I thought about my own daughter and couldn't possibly imagine what Amanda and Raffaele's parents were going through. These were normal human reactions to a horrible injustice.

I have done extensive research on this case including reading independent scientist's opinions about the DNA evidence, viewing hours of crime scene video, looking at hundreds of photographs and analyzing defense expert presentations along side the prosecution's presentations. I am convinced that I am right. I am convinced that Amanda and Raffaele are innocent. In fact, I have never been more sure of anything in my life. I urge you to read the information provided throughout this site and come to your own conclusion.

You can say, why care so much? There are a lot of problems in this world. My response would be:  when a person has an injustice done to them, it is the responsibility of the masses to stand up for that person; for one day that person just might be you. Even worse, that person might be your son or daughter. Most people would expect parents to protect their children at all costs. That just makes it even more important for others to stand up and support Amanda and Raffaele. Parents and family can only do so much.

Meredith Kercher had her life stolen from her. Meredith and her family deserve justice. Imprisoning two innocent people will bring no peace and certainly, no justice for Meredith Kercher.
